The time has not yet com to write off Legend of the Seeker if viewers of the short-lived show have anything to say regarding its fate. Minded to persuade the Disney/ABC family there is plenty of audience to support the franchise, Seeker fans all over the world have assembled and themselves known. Contributing more than $20,000 for print ads alone in barely a handful of weeks, Seeker fans have proven a resolve to save the Seeker. The Seeker fan groups gather on Websites like this Legend of the Seeker fan Site.
Legend of the Seeker finished its run after ABC Studios was unable to find a contract with a broadcaster to replace the Tribune Station Group, which pulled out in March. Tribune declared bankruptcy in late 2008 and looked for savings by any means possible. Rather than try to grow visibility for Legend of the Seeker, Tribune instead elected to go with simple programming from Jerry Springer.
Proving to television executives that fandom means business, fan groups worked with each other to create a video that demands the production’s resurrection. Fans in numerous locations captured quick video clips to be assembled together. One fan, Aleyna Dennis, uploaded a tribute song (”Hey there, Seeker”) to the tune of Plain White Ts’ “Hey There, Delilah”. Dennis’ song was used as the soundtrack for a very cool accolade to the Seeker and the show.
Perhaps the best stratagem to date, fans for Legend of the Seeker are campaigning to get star Craig Horner recommended for Time magazine’s Person of the Year. The theme they are promoting is “Never Give Up!”; according to some indefatigability is a relevant message for 2010. The Craig Horner campaign led the fan base to call for other magazines to put cast members on their covers. Crative fans have made mockups of magazine covers to garner attention.
Do you think the fan base save LOTS? Fans note that some franchises have been revived after cancellation. Some productions make the transition from television to the silver screen. In discussion groups, on Weblogs, and on fan sites like The Seeker Wall fans develop new ideas. Seeker fans have not yet exhausted their momentum. And perhaps we have seen merely the opening salvo of a long campaign.
The debate just comes down mere business. While there is a large audience for Legend of the Seeker broadcasters may choose other, lower cost productions lined up. SciFi and Fantasy TV has given up a lot of ground this season. Genre shows including Robin Hood and Flash Forward were dropped in advance of reaching their final resolutions.
