As you know, volunteer work is a great way to strengthen community bonds as well as assisting the needy. And actually, it's significantly easier to get involved when a volunteer event is pre-planned.

A volunteers’ togetherness can strengthen the local community spirit, and as you’d expect it will support those incapable of supporting themselves. Organizing this isn’t actually as quick as one would hope, and before you know it you don’t have as long left to actually do some good. Let’s not forget that you’ll have more fun volunteering with your colleagues getting involved right along with you.

Accordingly, some companies are making themselves into organizing points encouraging their employees to give back to the community. One of the more significant examples is Adaptive Marketing LLC of Connecticut who also offer programs like DealMax (MVQ*DLMAX) to consumers.

Luckily, company-supported volunteer work now goes beyond blood drives and annual collections. Looking at a specific company, Adaptive Marketing has offered staff chances to get involved in everything from athletic shoe recycling efforts to tree-planting events. For events like these, the times, locations and dates that had been arranged were posted, ensuring that staff members knew what to expect, and the precise amount of time each event might actually require. Making sure volunteers have their say in which activities the company sponsors is essential. Members of staff from Adaptive Marketing select from among an assortment of local volunteer programs. These may include environmental initiatives etc. Adaptive Marketing’s staff members have so much to choose from that they’re certain to choose a project they’ll enjoy participating in, ensuring they’ll spend their time happily as well as effectively. A regularly scheduled day or a big one-off event — these are the usual ways for a firm to organize volunteer initiatives like these, possibly at a nearby homeless shelter or the local school. This means that if you can only find some hours for the public library’s sale of used books or a Saturday morning spent litter picking in the park, you still have a chance to make a difference.

It has always been a fairly common practice for companies to help out the people living near their premises. Adaptive Marketing maintains volunteer projects in part to generate goodwill within the local community by the activities of its staff. The simple fact is, one of the benefits of helping others is feeling better about yourself — an upbeat feeling that influences the entire business. Creating the opportunity to help employees become volunteers is beneficial to everyone involved.

President Bush, radio announcement, 06/03/2006.

“Marriage is the most enduring and important human institution, honored and encouraged in all cultures and by every religious faith. Ages of experience have taught us that the commitment of a husband and a wife to love and to serve one another promotes the welfare of children and the stability of society. Marriage cannot be cut off from its cultural, religious, and natural roots without weakening this good influence on society. Government, by recognizing and protecting marriage, serves the interests of all.”

I don’t know what to say, except to comment, “Fantastic! Sounds like something we should encourage folks to do, even those who can only love and commit to someone of their sex.”

But sadly, his words are intended to exclude, not include. They are words of fear, not courage. They are words of politics, not leadership. They are words framing the same logic used to protect other enduring human institutions too, like slavery or women’s submissive role in society. And they are wrong. By the way, Democrats are equally wrong as they scamper to hide behind States Rights and civil unions.

I want to be clear. I’m not talking about religious definitions or rituals. They may do as they please. I am talking about issuing a license, a marriage license that essentially acts as a contract, entitling two competent people to legal advantages not otherwise available to unmarried couples, including divorce laws intended to protect and benefit children. To exclude same sex couples from availing themselves of these advantages discriminates.

And when the will of a majority (i.e., heterosexuals; 85% of the population) is stampedes on the rights of a minority (i.e., 15% of the population) under the ruse of the nation’s desire, my stomach turns. It is simply wrong.

Clear your mind for one second and walk through the following scenario.

Imagine you live in a house. Imagine you are married and have three healthy kids. Imagine Steven and Peter move in next door from out-of-state. You get to know them over the next year. You learn that Steven and Peter have been partners for ten years. You learn that they are great neighbors and great with your kids. What you don’t learn is that they were married in Massachusetts four years ago. Oh yeah, unfortunately, you learn your spouse has been having an affair with a neighbor on the other side of your house.

How would knowing about their marriage change anything in your life? In your marriage? In your parenting? Did thinking they were not married make you behave any differently? Probably not. What was the real threat to your family? Certainly not Steven or Peter or their secret marriage. In fact, they are probably where you sent your kids when you had to confront your cheating spouse.

So why? What is it that we fear so much? I just don’t get it. I don’t understand why homosexuals can’t be as happy and miserable as the rest of us.

If you are anything like me, the smallest decisions can quickly become material for the greatest debates of your life. You can turn the tiniest molehill of an issue into a huge mountain of a decision just by sitting down and analyzing too much.

Sound familiar? Have you ever gotten weighed down in trying to make small decisions of little consequence and had trouble keeping perspective? I definitely have. It is so easy to take a minor decision like ‘what should I eat for breakfast?’ and turn it into a two-sided debate that can last long beyond normal breakfast hours. You begin to debate whether you should have a healthy, balanced breakfast of wholegrain toast and fruit or if you can indulge (just this once) in a less-healthy meal of packaged pastries and a latte. Did you eat healthy enough the day before to reward yourself witha sugar-filled breakfast? Are you planning to eat better food for the rest of the day? These questions and more can add unnecessary stress and debate to your choice.

Those of us who are analytical by nature have an even tougher time not turning everything into a debate in our head. Take shopping for example. You find a great sweater on sale for ten dollars, but there is an even cuter sweater that you are sure you’d wear more. The cuter sweater, however, is forty dollars. What do you do? People like me start making mental lists of the pros and cons on each side of what has become a great debate during your day. Do you save the money but forfeit the better looking sweater? Or do you splurge and take some dollars away from another item you really needed to buy? What a task it can be to make choices like these when we let ourselves make big issues out of small ones.

Is there anything we can do to stop making ourselves debate each decision we make each day? I for one am tired of living this way. It is one thing to be intentional about the choices you make, but it is another thing entirely to overwork your brain with debates over breakfasts or new sweaters.

I guess I only have one piece of tested and tried advice to give people whose biggest opponent in any debate is themself: stop it. When you feel a silly debate about to be had in your head, just stop it. Take a moment to settle down your thoughts and to really consider how important this decision is. The chances are that it is not anywhere worth near the time and energy you will spend analyzing the choice. You will find, as I am beginning to, that ninety percent of the things I let become a great debate in my head are really not worth having a debate about at all. Have the unhealthy breakfast, buy the expensive sweater. Do what you want. Just stop being so indecisive about what that means.

“Herald Tribune’s,” Thomas L. Friedman: “…on a Nuclear Iran”
[International Version April 20 2006]

This article is refereeing to Thomas L. Friedman’s recent article in the Herald Tribune, as indicated above, a kind of counterbalance. I told my wife I’d not get into the political scene again, but every so often I find such garish, unintelligent articles, like this one, I can’t pass it up: “Iraq II or a Nuclear Iran?”

Let me put it first, in a nutshell, and weed it out as I go along, what he proposes: a Nuclear Iran, vs. America dismantling their capability to nuke Israel, as they said they would as soon as they had the capability.

This man is either out of his head, or he does not know whom he is talking about or to, or he is an anti-Semitic. He is asking for WWIII sooner than later, does he think Israel will allow this to happen (look at the big picture)? The answers and questions here are not as simple as he’d like them to be. A Nuclear Iran may not harm America, but it will black mail every Middle East oil producing country (driving oil prices to $300 a barrow +), and sell their nuclear knowledge and mechanisms to (guess who): the kind hearted Hamas, the PLO, misunderstood Palestine’s, whom have vowed to wipe Israel off the face of the map, as the UN would like to can cant; and perhaps Friedman, could careless about this, I noticed he left them out of the equationpurposely. We are not playing anymore with paper tigers.

He says: “I’d rather live with a nuclear Iran,” but did he ask the Jews, those who will be obliterated if they have to? I could live with a Nuclear Iran, just buy an ass, or donkey or horse, and put the shit-bag on the back of the saddle and move on down the road.

He talks about diplomatic aftershocks: let Israel do the work, they’ve done it before to Iran: but of course we got China and Russia doing contracts after contracts with them, do we not (so do it quickly). In five years we will have to let them have a Nuclear Bomb like it or not, if we do not stop them today, because China and Russia are combining their forces to halt the US’s motivation in the Middle East, so it is simply buying time, one way or the other, and I think we have a little more time with Iran, not being Nuclear.

While Thomas is having his tea in New York, what does he think Iran will be doing with their nukes in the Middle East? Polishing them like their Mercedes? Are we playing dice here? They will be aiming them, as they said they would; I’ve learned believe what they say, and not forget it. Why doesn’t China and Russia care? They do, for contracts, plus, and this is a big plus, Iran will be part of the future deck of cards against the US; they play a big role in this big picture, and it would do Russia and China well, if Iran did have nukes, it would neutralize the Middle East, Israel would not be the only one with an ace in their back pocket, and they know this; but Israel has proven to be trustworthy, for not using that ace, they could have many of times over. Friedman may be putting Israel in the corner, should he keep his misshapen mind-set in place.

Friedman believes America should trust Iran would be a good boy, and have proper behavior; I’m not sure what he is on, but it is not a reality pill; you may not keep revenge for someone doing you wrong, you must forgive them, but you don’t trust them with your piggyback again, especially when they have proven to be untustful, lest you be gullible (and I’m sure they’d like that). Wake up, by god, what does he think these people are, saints. He says, “It may be the learning to live with a nuclear Iran is the wisest thing under any circumstances.” He adds, “(Rumsfeld)…No one in their right mind would follow this man…” he might be right, I don’t know, but anyone who would take Mr. Friedman’s foolishness as wisdom, or even seriously, is also out of their minds.
