The poker online player to the immediate left of the big blind is “under the gun” (UTG) because this player is first to act after the online poker players get their pocket cards. It is also an early position for the ensuing rounds, and could be first if the blinds fold. When you are in the UTG position, the prudent thing to do is only play the most premium hands, like pocket faces or an Ace with a face. This poker position is the most vulnerable pre-flop since this player is first to act. Limping when UTG is a weak move. Basically, from this position you should only play hands that you are willing to raise. By limping in without a raise, you let all the players behind you limp it too. The more players contending over the pot makes it harder to win. From UTG position, you should be selectively aggressive, and play big hands and attempt to narrow the field with a big bet. Of course, there are a few occasions when limping from UTG is acceptable. For instance, if the table tends to be weak and passive with mostly callers, then go ahead and limp with suited connectors or a low pocket pair. If there has been little pre-flop betting, then adjust your play and hand selection accordingly.
